KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Schools will ask voters in May to approve a $97-million bond issue, the largest in the district’s history to maintain school facilities, upgrade technologies, and do some new construction.
For the typical homeowner with a $100,000 home, it would mean an additional $63 in taxes each year.
Most of the money would be spent doing building maintenance and improvement on the dozens of large structures the district has to keep up.
Some of it would be spent replacing Edison Elementary, which is nearly a century old, with a new structure.
There is also a plan to add classrooms and a gym to Phoenix High School, and build a central kitchen, to improve the quality and efficiency of providing hot meals.
