MACOMB COUNTY (WKZO AM/FM) — Meteor hunters have converged on mid-Michigan, looking for fragments of the rock that lit up the sky over Michigan Tuesday night.
The U.S. Geological Survey’s Don Blakeman clarified reports that they recorded an energy transfer from the meteor was the equivalent of a magnitude-2.0 earthquake. It wasn’t an actual earthquake, but it did make their needles bounce.
He says it could have been from an impact, but more likely was the vibration from the sonic boom registering on their equipment.
He says bits and pieces of it will likely be found on the ground in the region. It’s touched off a gold rush of sorts in the Macomb County area, with folks looking around for fragments.
Meteorite material can be worth as much as $300 to $1000 a gram.
