KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The larger than usual population at the Gospel Mission are getting a special treat and more upscale meals because of the same weather that drove them indoors.
It’s all because the extreme cold did a number on the refrigerators at the new Trader Joes in Oshtemo.
Suddenly they had 35-thousand pounds of fresh food and no place to keep it.
They decided to donate it to the city’s biggest homeless shelter which has seen its population soar during this bitter cold spell.
The Mission says it’s the largest single donation of food they have ever gotten.
In fact it was more than the Mission can use, so they are passing some of it along to a local food pantry.
