MUSKEGON TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — They aren’t exactly calling it the Miracle of Muskegon but officials there are pleasantly surprised that a 40 car pileup on U.S. 31 on Friday resulted in only three minor injuries.
Muskegon Township Police Chief David Wypa says ice covered pavement contributed but it was visibility that caused the massive pileup.
The combination of an intense band of Lake Effect Snow and drifting created zero visibility, a true white out condition.
He says they are pretty lucky it wasn’t even worse. He says they had a 30-car pileup on the same highway, just a little to the north of yesterday’s chain reaction on Tuesday, and officials there say the conditions have not changed.
They are warning that drivers take extreme care on U.S. 31 because it could happen again the next time the lake effect machine cranks up.
