KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Weather this cold can begin to test and strain the systems of our vehicles, the one piece of machinery that we depend on and that most of us leave outdoors a good part of the day.
Mechanic John Russo at Woodward’s Garage says the cooling system on cars and batteries are usually the first to fail because their weaknesses are exposed by the extreme cold.
He says cold air will require more cranking power. He says anti-freeze loses its properties over time, and when it freezes it can damage radiators and hoses.
Russo says tires without treads can be a liability on icy surfaces.
The ability to go is important but the ability to stop when you need to may be more important.
