KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) –The bad weather Christmas Day delayed flights out of Michigan airports, caused a number of slide offs along local highways and between the falling snow and gusts of up to 35 mph, plow trucks were hard pressed to keep up with the snow.
It probably prompted a lot of people to change their travel plans for safety sake.
The snow is expected to be less of an issue for the rest of the week, even though lake effect snow could appear at any time.
The bitter cold will remain a constant through the work week.
Fashion flies out the window and most Michiganders dress more practically in boots, layers of sweaters and shirts, bulky coats if they are smart. Long underwear and snowmobile outfits are popular with those who are really serious about staying out in the cold.
Temperatures are expected to remain in the teens or lower all week with even lower wind-chill factors.
MDOT’s Nick Schirripa says road salts and other chemicals they use to melt snow just don’t work in temperatures this cold, so expect roads to remain slippery and ice covered in many cases through the work week.
‘As cold as it gets here, you can always be sure that it’s a lot colder on the other side of the lake and to the north, thanks to the moderating effects of Lake Michigan.
