KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Voters will likely be asked to increase their own taxes for Kalamazoo schools in 2018.
A new EPIC-MRA survey commissioned by Kalamazoo Schools to gauge the public’s opinion of a bond request for school improvements shows there is support, as long as Trustees do not ask for too much or propose school improvements that are not popularly supported.
Maintaining schools and classroom technology scored one and two, according to Pollster Bernie Porn, but building a new central kitchen and providing indoor facilities for athletic practices during inclement weather scored low.
The enthusiasm of the respondents for building replacement projects depended on the building.
Porn asked how supportive respondents were to a 1.5 mil question, a one mil question and a half mil request, and suggested they make their request around, or just a little above one mil, judging from the responses he received.
A large community committee is working on the bond proposal and will use the survey results to formulate a recommendation for the Superintendent and the board in the next few months.
