PORTAGE (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Portage is getting the gift of land for Christmas.
Portage City Council member Claudette Reid and her husband are donating a parcel near I-94 and Lover’s Lane with the stipulation that it be maintained as a nature preserve and that it be named in honor of former Mayor Betty Ongley.
The 11 acre parcel has Portage Creek along one boundary and Rail Road tracks on the other side and is wedged between a neighborhood and commercial property.
City Manager Lawrence Shaffer says it’s valued at about $112,000.
The council voted unanimously to accept the gift.
Reid and her husband plan to build a home on an adjacent parcel.
