KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Kalamazoo has been talking about turning one way streets downtown into two way streets for decades, and it may finally happen.
Just getting around downtown can be frustrating if you don’t know your way.
Complicating the issue is that the main streets were all trunk-lines controlled by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
MDOT is interested in handing control of Michigan and Kalamazoo Avenues and Westnedge and Park back to the city. They are one-way streets for all or part of their journeys through Kalamazoo.
It will take a lot of planning, some serious money and public hearings, but it could happen in the near future.
City Staff says turning them back into two ways streets would make it easier to get around downtown and make it more biker and pedestrian friendly.
But it will also mean it will take more time for motorists to get through downtown.
