KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Public Safety Officer Glyn Hawkins didn’t wait to put on his fire gear when he charged up to a burning home he discovered in the 900 block of James Street just before 7 yesterday morning.
The home was belching smoke and fire from the attic so he began pounding on the door and the windows loudly enough to wake anyone who was sleeping inside.
Sure enough the lone occupant of the first floor woke up and managed to escape. The tenants on the second floor were not home.
Once fire crews arrived it took them about 20 minutes to knock down the fire. They are still trying to determine the cause.
