WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO AM/FM) — Congressman Fred Upton has been named to the Conference Committee that will be sorting out the differences between the House and Senate Tax Reform Bills, but his influence may be limited to a few issues that have come through the House Commerce Committee.
Upton says there are a lot of items in the Senate version that he prefers to the House bills. He would like to see the tax savings for individuals become permanent and college scholarships not taxed, among other things.
He says if they can put together the best of both bills, it would be a good plan, but concedes the opposite could happen too.
Dr. Matt Longjohn, one of several Democrats who want to take on Upton next fall says he hopes the Congressman puts his constituent’s needs ahead of his donors.
The Senate hasn’t named who its sending to the conference committee yet. That will all happen next week.
Democrats in Berrien County have scheduled a protest at Upton’s field office in St. Joseph Friday afternoon at 5pm.
