DEARBORN (WKZO AM/FM)–When it comes to winter snow, the first snowfall of the year may be the most scenic, and the most enjoyable because it’s new and different. It might even give a boost to that Christmas Spirit, but when it comes to driving, the first is the worst.
Susan Hiltz with AAA says most drivers have forgotten the special skills it takes to navigate on road surfaces that may not provide the same kind of traction that dry pavement will.
Among the skills you have to relearn: leaving a safe distance from the car ahead of you, slowing down and matching your speed to conditions, keeping your distance from plow trucks, braking, steering and turning.
Leave plenty of time to get where you are going especially in these first few weeks, until all those winter driving skills come back.
