PONTIAC (WKZO AM/FM) — They breifly restored the roar at the Pontiac Silverdome right on schedule yesterday, but somebody miscalculated. The roar was from demolitions explosives rigged to blow in sequence, taking out external beams holding up the stadium.
The beams were severed, but the Stadium did not collapse into a pile of rubble like it was supposed to. The contractor claims about 10% of the charges did not go off.
They say they will either rewire them and try again sometime this week, or just go at the structure with heavy equipment.
Spectators caused traffic jams one last time to get a vantage spot for the demolition, and a number of former Lions players came out for the spectacle.Like so many times when the Lions were playing, they went home disappointed.
