BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) –A Calhoun County man who allegedly tried to firebomb the Elm Street Electrical Substation, owned by Consumers Energy in June of last year, now claims he was insane at the time of the crime.
Joshua Buchanan has entered a not guilty by reason of insanity plea to the five charges he faces.
Police say Buchanan tossed filled gas cans over the fence and into the substation.
He thought they were lit but they were not.
He tried to flick lit cigarettes at them but could not ignite them. He was spotted and arrested at the scene.
He is charged with arson, malicious destruction of property and other counts.
