(KALAMAZOO) (WKZO) – A staple of the holiday season, the revered Christmas Tree, may cost your holiday budget more this year. Experts say that, due to a shortage of trees, the selection will be reduced…and the early tree shopper will get the one they want. The situation goes back to the Great Recession of 2007, when stocks of trees were destroyed because of lack of demand…and that resulted in fewer tree plantings at that time. Since it takes about 10 years for a tree to grow, doing the math points to a tree shortage beginning this year…so sellers urge you not to wait to get yours. Several area tree farms and retailers will be open during the Thanksgiving weekend.
