BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — Battle Creek Firefighters had a busy night Tuesday evening.
A fire during the dinner hour is being blamed on a wood stove. Fire crews were dispatched to the home on 26th Street and discovered flames in the garage and an attached breezeway.
They were able to prevent it from going far into the home, pulling down the ceiling in the kitchen to get at embers in the attic.
They estimate the damage about $35,000 to the structure and contents. They managed to rescue a dog, a bird and two cats from the home.
A few hours later, a quick response to an apartment fire in the complexes on the City’s south side allowed fire crews to limit the damage to two apartments in that complex.
Apartment 19 was damaged by smoke and flames and apartment 18 above it by just smoke at 5217 Horizon Drive.
Still the total damage was set at $125,000. On tenant required treatment for a respiratory ailment because of the smoke and cold. They are looking for the cause of that blaze.
