KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — The Board of Trustees in Kalamazoo Township has voted to move ahead cautiously and allow any medical marijuana business that wants to locate there, to come in.
They feel the number of businesses will be limited by the marketplace and available locations due to zoning and other restrictions, like buffers between dispensaries and schools, churches and each other.
Most of that has yet to be worked out.
Trustee Steve Leuty remain very much opposed because the state has not issued rules and they have no idea what they are getting into.
But the Majority felt like Nicolette Leigh who says that most of the issues will be addressed as they work the process. They approved an ordinance for first reading…just the first step in the process.
All of the entities that are interested in starting a medical marijuana business in S.W. Michigan will be convened on the Wings Event Center Tuesday morning where the State held workshops on how to apply for licenses, and let them know what will be required of applicants and other topics.
It is fraught with controversy because the targets and rules keep changing and what may be a requirement today may change before emergency guidelines are released in a few weeks, and change again before the final design of the program is finalized sometime next year.
They also plan to demonstrate their monitoring system which will keep track of each marijuana plant from seed to sale.
Tuesday’s event is the fourth of five such educational opportunities staged around the state.
