LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Michigan’s firearms deer season opens on Wednesday, November 15 and runs through November 30.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says due to mild winters in the Upper Peninsula, they are expecting an increase in deer harvest in the northern Lower Peninsula. Firearms season means more deer on the roads.
In heavily wooded areas like Allegan County, Sheriff Frank Baker says it’s likely you’re going to encounter deer in the roadway. Sheriff Baker says if you see deer slow down as they tend to travel in pairs if not packs. Don’t swerve for deer he says.
“Actually, striking that deer is probably a safer alternative than swerving hard to miss it. One of the things that we see is that people swerve, lose control of their vehicle and go off the road and strike a tree. That tree is a lot harder than that deer and that’s where we see the real rise in the injuries that occur with a car deer crash. As a result of the swerving to miss the deer, actually causes a greater risk than actually striking the deer itself.”
The DNR has a seven-page document with all the guidelines for hunting restrictions on it’s website.
