PORTAGE (WKZO AM/FM) — Portage Police have revealed that Christopher Lockhart did leave a note behind before he hung himself yesterday, expressing remorse for killing his wife, saying he snapped during an argument and struck her, killing her.
It contained a map showing where in Allegan County he left the body. They found her in a shallow grave.
An autopsy has confirmed her identity.
ALLEGAN COUNTY (WKZO AM/FM) — Undisclosed information related to the Lockhart case reportedly prompted officials in Allegan County to search “a possible crime scene in rural Allegan County”. No specific location was given.
They stated that their efforts were hampered because it was a large wooded area and they were searching in a heavy rain. They searched until it got too dark.
More information may be released Wednesday morning.
ORIGINAL STORY
PORTAGE (WKZO AM/FM) –One of the biggest mysteries of the year has taken another dramatic turn with the discovery of the dead body of Christopher Lockhart in his home in the 10,000 block on Poplar Bluff in Portage.
Senior Deputy Chief John Blue says “the preliminary investigation indicates signs of a possible suicide”.
An autopsy and toxicology tests are planned.
They are combing over the home looking for anything that will help them solve the disappearance of his wife, Theresa who was last seen May 18th near her home in Portage.
Police became concerned when Lockhart missed a 10:00 am report time, and his GPS tether indicated he had not moved for several hours.
The Office of Community Corrections and Portage Police initiated a welfare check, entered his home and found his body this afternoon.
Forensic crews have been going over the home and the body was removed by the coroner shortly after 6 pm.
A few weeks after her disappearence, Lockhart was declared the one and only person of interest in what police declared was her likely homicide.
Lockhart briefly spiraled out of control after that, yelling obscenities at neighbors, getting caught sabotaging cable TV, a drunken driving charge and two bond violations.
He remained uncooperative with police about the disappearance of his wife. He had been on GPS and Alcohol tethers since those arrests.
By most accounts, it had been a stormy marriage prior to her disappearence.
Neighbors report hearing screaming fits and abuse coming from the home, most of it coming from Christopher, directed at his wife, who taught in Schoolcraft Schools. In fact it was her principal who first reported her missing, not her husband.
Portage Police says the investigation is continuing and updates will be issued as they surface, but we can only hope that Lockhart left something behind that will resolve his wife’s disappearance.
