KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) –Near record rain storms dumped up to 8 inches of rain this weekend, bringing an extreme end to what had been nearly a month of dry weather in Kalamazoo, Van Buren and Calhoun Counties.
It was bad timing for Western Michigan University’s Homecoming celebration.
The flooding forced WMU to scrub the Stampede Tailgate and postpone their Homecoming game with Akron until 1 pm Sunday.
Vacuum trucks went to work overnight and pumped over a million gallons out of the stadium.
Because it was Homecoming weekend and all the local hotels and motels were filled, Akron had to book rooms in Lansing. Despite the adversity, they beat the Broncos 14 to 13.
Not that the Western Team did not try to comeback in the second half, holding the Zips scoreless and scoring 13 points. It was just two short of what they needed.
It snaps a 9 game home field win streak. WMU’s record falls to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in MAC Conference play.
