KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Former WMU Trustee and Kellogg Government liaison George Franklin has ended the speculation and formally announced his will be running for Congress as a Democrat, for the seat now held by Fred Upton.
Franklin says he has spent his life trying to make a difference by not standing on the sidelines and looked in the mirror one day and said that he could do this.
He says he won’t be running attack ads and will try to run a positive campaign.
He thinks the last election taught us that a lot of people feel they don’t have a fair shot of getting ahead and he would like to restore some of that feeling and opportunity.
He enters a busy field with several candidates already announced on the Democratic side: WMU Professors Paul Banac and Paul Clements, biologist Rick Eichholtz, Dr. Matt Longjohn, and Pfizer employee Eponine Garrod.
There is also a lot of speculation about what Upton has planned for next year, after openly exploring the possibility of running for the U.S. Senate during the recent Republican Leadership Conference on Mackinac Island a few weeks ago.
If Upton decides to take on Debbie Stabenow, there could be a small army of Republicans running too.
