GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO AM/FM) — There is an ugly truth going down on the farm…that not all fruits and vegetables come out perfectly shaped and flawless.
You would think that from a stroll through most super markets but those tasty orbs are just the ones that made it through sorting.
The irregular ones may wind up as juice or chopped up in pre-processed food or cans, some is donated to food banks, but its estimated that 20 to 40% gets tossed because it doesn’t meet standards for appearance.
To reduce waste, Meijer spokesman Joe Hirschmugl says they are now selling oddly sized scarred and shaped fruit and veggies at a discount. It’s typically items that are in season and all from North American farms.
He says there are “Misfit” bins in every one of their stores.
