BERRIEN COUNTY, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A 66-year-old man from Illinois has died following a tubing accident.
Robert Amenitsch of Niles, Illinois was on a tube about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, September 24, and was being towed at a slow speed by his son, Michael, of Stevensville. The Berrian County Sheriff’s Office says say the man rolled on his back and then into the water about two miles north of the piers in St. Joseph.His son turned the boat around immediately, and found his father unresponsive.
CPR was performed on the beach with the help of good samaritans then Amenitsch was taken to the U.S. Coast Guard station by the USCG vessel, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident happened in a “no wake” zone of the lake north of Rocky Gap County Park.
Police are still investigating.
