AUGUSTA (WKZO AM/FM) – A truck driver told Michigan State Police troopers that a horrific looking accident that shut down I-94 near the 93-mile marker for several hours on Saturday was the result of distracted driving.
63-year-old Charles Rothney says he looked away from the road to put down his glasses and crashed into the back of a car that had slowed because of congestion ahead.
An elderly couple in that car ,Cletus and Ruthann Kyle of Ludington wound up in the median with minor injuries.
The tractor-trailer then plowed through the cable barrier and struck a car driven by Linda Engle of Bellevue in the opposite lane and both of the vehicles burst into flames.
A fourth car then went into the cable barriers rather than hit the wreckage.
The smoke from the noon crash could be seen for miles.
Rothney was treated and released at Bronson Battle Creek.
State Police credit seat belts for the relatively minor injuries suffered by the survivors.
