KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Friday night High School officials delayed football kickoffs until things cooled off a little.
They added rest and hydration time outs to the game clock.
That is good advice for anyone venturing out for activities this weekend. Heat warnings are going out as west Michigan hunkers down for what could be temperatures that break all-time records for these dates in the low and mid 90’s.
It’s not a dangerous extreme heat, but combined with the humidity, it’s the kind of heat that means es taking it easy, especially if you already have health concerns, and staying hydrated even if you are healthy.
Meteorologist Ernie Ostuno says we should see normal fall weather by Wednesday, and beach weather until then.
That means more hot classrooms on Monday and Tuesday.
Kalamazoo Schools issued a statement basically saying that things may not be optimum for learning in hot classrooms but they too are taking precautions to make sure students are hydrated. “we are joining with the rest of the community in dealing with the hot days”.
The extended summer weather means the danger of West Nile and other mosquito borne diseases may still be a problem.
Kent County Health officials are reporting four human cases of west Nile have been verified, without offering any specific details about the condition of the adult patients.
West Nile cannot be transmitted from person to person. Health officials say the best way to avoid the virus is by wearing bug spray or staying inside.
