WASHINGTON, DC (WHTC-AM/FM) – A source close to Congressman Fred Upton says they are 90% sure he will run against Debbie Stabenow for the U.S. Senate.
MIRS News in Lansing says the source who has not been named, say they have learned two things. One that Stabenow may be vulnerable and that there are no “A listers” currently in the race on the Republican side.
The St. Joseph Congressman has told WHTC News repeatedly that he is happy with his day job. It was just last week that a piece in the NY Times said Upton was retiring…along with other GOP members in the house.
“I’ve known this writer for a long time and I said to him A, Fake News and B, you really think that I’d maintain this schedule that I have if you thought I was retiring?”
Tom Wilbur Upton’s Communications Director told WHTC News this morning in an email that while they don’t comment on specifics from unnamed sources you can quote me on this:
“Fred is happy with his day job and remains very focused on the bipartisan work he’s doing for Southwest Michigan and our entire state. From implementation of his landmark 21st Century Cures Act, to protecting our Great Lakes, healthcare and immigration reform, improving the economy and more. He continues to explore all of his options and is busy with a packed schedule back here and in D.C.”
There is also a report that Upton’s wife and child have given their blessing to a Senate race. The report says if there is a decision, it won’t come until late fall at the earliest.
