LANSING (WKZO-AM/FM) — A bill allowing full background checks on those seeking law enforcement training in Michigan is now being considered by the full Senate.
The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards is only allowed to do checks on Michigan criminal behavior, creating a loophole that could allow out-of-state felons into police schools.
State Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, says his bill would allow MCOLES to have the Michigan State Police conduct fingerprint checks through the MSP and FBI systems on academy applicants.
“I speak to chiefs of police and other sheriffs and they all want the best candidates possible,” Jones said. “They certainly want a full background check.”
Jones is the former sheriff of Eaton County.
The legislation exited committee earlier this week.
