LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A proposal to mandate auto insurance rates is dead in the state Senate.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan proposed that auto insurance rates be cut by 30-percent. Senate Minority Leader Morris Hood the Third of Detroit says Democrats are open to negotiations.
“The key to it is to get lower insurance rates. We’ve got some of the higest insurance rates in the country here in Michigan.”
Senate. Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof says that idea is dead because it interferes with the free market. The Ottawa County Republican from West Olive says he wants to try to pass reforms that got through the Senate last year with the support of insurance companies and hospitals.
“Any time you get the insurance companies and hospitals to agree on three things together, the immaculate conception has just happened”.
For years lawmakers have tried to reform the state’s unique auto insurance system with no luck. This comes on the heels of a new study that finds finds women in Michigan are being charged more than men for auto insurance.
