JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – As hurricane Irma threatens Florida, Consumers Energy announced Thursday that over 200 employees and contracted personnel will be heading south to assist local electric companies.
Landfall for Irma is expected this weekend in Florida and crews will be leaving the Jackson Service Center Thursday.
Lineworker crews from 15 Consumers Energy service centers were expected to make the trip. They are initially scheduled to go to Lake City, Florida.
Consumers Energy personnel are expected to stay in Florida for up to two weeks. They will coordinate directly with Florida Power and Light.
At last report, Irma was listed as a Category 5 storm with peak winds of over 180 miles an hour.
