MACKINAC BRIDGE (WKZO AM/FM) — Travelers heading north or south over the Big Mac on Labor Day morning are being advised to change their plans, unless they want to spend most of the morning in a traffic jam.
The Mackinac Bridge was equally divided between walkers and drivers during the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk in previous years, but due to concerns about terrorism, the span will be closed to regular traffic from 6:30 a.m. to noon for the first time.s
Bob Sweeney with the Bridge Authority says they made the decision in light of recent world events and a change in tactics by terrorists.
Police are expecting traffic backups as people arrive in the Straits area for the event, and will have port-a-potties and snacks available along Interstate 75 and US-2. Tens of thousands are expected to walk the bridge.
