BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM/FM) — The sentencing of Christopher Carpenter of Battle Creek has been delayed after confusion over his plea deal.
Carpenter is charged with beating his wife so badly that she was hospitalized and died two days later.
The defense claims they were told Carpenter would get 5-to-10 years in prison with credit for time served. The prosecution now claims they made no such deal.
It’s not the first mistake in the case. Carpenter had been charged with murder until it was discovered an allergic reaction to a medication at the hospital was the cause of death, not the beating.
The lawyers have until Sept. 11 to review the court video and sort it out. That’s when the next sentencing date has been scheduled.
