KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO-AM/FM) — Representatives with the American Red Cross of Southwest Michigan say some of their volunteers have successfully arrived in Houston to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
However, Vicki Eichstaedt, who is with the organization, says many were redirected to the Texas capitol of Austin and Louisiana.
“We did send 16 from southwest Michigan total,” Eichstaedt said. “From across the state, there have been at least 67.”
Eichstaedt said Houston is the final destination for local volunteers.
“We will not send our volunteers into harm’s way,” Eichstaedt said. “Those who didn’t make it all the way to Houston will stay until it’s safe for them to get all the way there.”
Flood waters are still rising and hundreds of rescue calls have been fielded in the nation’s fourth-largest city.
