LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Beginning today, a new federally compliant state Driver’s License or State ID card will become available.
You will need one if you want to get on board a plane, or enter a federal building, military base, or other sensitive potential terrorist target in a few years.
It won’t be required for those functions until October of 2020, but you may need to get one the next time you renew your license. It’s all about homeland security, meant to provide another level of security to avoid terrorist attacks.
It was first enacted after 9-11 in reaction to the terrorists, who were able to get state ID .
It’s taken this long to implement because it’s controversial, and it’s been changed a number of times by Congress.
Technology has changed since 9-11 and that has also delayed implementation, and states have also asked for extensions and delays.
Citizens of the U.S. are eligible will get a gold star in the corner of the license.
Regular licenses will still be good for everything else, as long as you never fly or need to have access to a nuclear plant.
Then you will need additional I.D.
