LAS VEGAS (WKZO-AM/FM) — Grand Rapids native Floyd Mayweather Jr. has beaten Conor McGregor in their Saturday bout in Las Vegas.
It was unusual because Mayweather, who was considered the best pound-for-pound fighter of his era, had come out of retirement to fight a champion from another combat discipline, mixed-martial arts.
McGregor looked strong in the early rounds, but Mayweather waited him out, knowing that he probably wouldn’t know how to pace himself, because it was McGregor’s first boxing match. Eventually, it was all Mayweather and the referee stopped the bout in the 10th round when it looked like McGregor was unable to defend himself.
With the technical knockout and a 50-0 record, Mayweather announced he would once again retire.
Mayweather said after the fight that he wanted to go out with a bang.
Mayweather was guaranteed $100 million for the fight. McGregor will bring home at least $30 million, but there are reports they will actually take home two or three times that much.
