KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — It’s an instance where body cameras on Kalamazoo Public Safety officers played a role, giving the department and the judge a video replay of exactly what happened when Diante Churchwell had a street confrontation with a group of officers immediately after his brother was arrested for possessing drugs in early July.
Churchwell was found not guilty Thursday of restricting and obstructing police in a bench trial, although his behavior may have been inappropriate and his language offensive, Judge Richard Santoni said it was not criminal.
The officer involved, Derek Turner, was reprimanded for briefly grabbing Churchwell by the neck, but remained on duty.
