GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Police are sweeping the state for sex offenders who are not complying with state registration laws.
In Grand Rapids, more than 600 known sex offender residences were contacted and 54 new violations were recorded by the Michigan State Police.
During the two-day operation, Michigan State Police officers teamed up with local law enforcement to verify information from registered sex offenders. Warrants are currently being sought for the new infractions. 135 residences held no response and will be revisited at a later date.
The Michigan Sex Offenders Registration Act requires registered sex offenders to regularly report to their area law enforcement agency, sheriff’s office or nearest MSP post to verify their address. Changes of name, employment, education enrollment, internet identifiers and vehicle also must be submitted to local law enforcement.
