KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes will host an event at their facility on Portage Street Tuesday through Thursday aimed at getting residents to contact members of Congress about the necessity of national hunger programs.
Meg Gernaat with the organization says the aim of “Hear Us on Hunger” is to influence legislators to to better fund hunger programs and initiatives.
“Anyone can pop in between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and we have a large confernece room in our building where they can sit down and write a letter or make a phone call,” Gernaat said.
They’re concerned about President Trump’s proposed cuts to federal nutrition and food stamp programs.
“You’re looking at a cut of about 50 billion meals every year nationwide,” Gernaat said.
And that reduction could put more strain on local food banks.
Gernaat says cuts could hit Kalamazoo especially hard, where one in three live below the poverty line.
