GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Governor Rick Snyder has ordered flags will be flown at half-staff today in honor of former West Michigan congressman Vern Ehlers.
A memorial service will be held today for the former 3rd District Representative who died at the age of 83 last Tuesday. The service will be held this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Eastern Avenue Christian Reformed Church on Eastern Avenue south of Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids.
Governor Snyder who called Ehlers “a devoted public servant” who “represented the best of Michigan.” The Republican also served in the state senate for eight years and the state house for two. Before becoming a politician, he taught physics at Calvin College for 16 years.
According to his obituary, Memorial contributions may be made to any of the following: Vernon and Johanna Ehlers scholarship at Calvin College; John and Alice Ehlers scholarship at Calvin Theological Seminary; Grand Rapids Community Foundation, Challenge Scholars Program; or West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC).
