KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — The man charged with being the at-fault driver in the death of Comstock Township Fire Chief Ed Switalski has been formally charged with reckless driving causing death and is expected to be released on his own recognizance.
Brandon Clevenger, 24, has a clean record and a wife. He isn’t expected to be a flight risk.
Clevenger will be equipped with an ankle bracelet that monitors his alcohol use.
The maximum sentence is 15 years. While that may seem like too little for taking a life, Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Pali Matyas says it was not intentional, and the charge is justified.
Investigators claim that he was traveling over 90 mph on Interstate 94 and was using his cellphone just before the crash that killed Switalski in June.
