PAW PAW (WKZO-AM/FM) — Van Buren County Sheriff’s deputies say distracted driving is to blame for a rear-end crash on westbound Interstate 94 near Paw Paw that shut down the freeway for 30 minutes Sunday.
It all happened around 5 p.m. The at-fault driver was later cited for failure to yield and was taken to Bronson Lakeview Hospital.
The victims in the rear-ended vehicle were a 27-year-old man, his 27-year-old wife and the couple’s two children. They were treated at the scene.
According to a press release, the The 40-year-old male driver was not paying attention to the road when he crashed because he was watching the arrest of a 17-year-old from the Watervliet area. That teenager was taken to jail after a marijuana clump fell out of his mouth. Reports came into dispatchers earlier about subjects driving while smoking the drug.
That driver later admitted to law enforcement he was driving while high. A passenger in his vehicle, an 18-year-old from the Lawrence area, was given a drug possession citation.
