DEARBORN (WKZO-AM/FM) — AAA says Michigan’s average gas price is starting the week lower.
Susan Hiltz, a spokesperson with the auto club, said the statewide average is $2.40. That’s eight cents less than last week’s average. It’s also seven cents more that what drivers were generally paying at this time last year.
It comes at a time before the summer driving season’s last hurrah.
“People are kind of getting out of the vacation mode and into the work mode,” Hiltz said. “That might not be the same story once we go into Labor Day.”
Hiltz also said prices are being pushed lower by increased production at oil fields and refineries.
GasBuddy.com says the average was $2.29 in Kalamazoo, $2.36 in Grand Rapids and $2.32 in Lansing on Monday.
Hiltz said AAA will release its Labor Day travel report either late this week or early next week.
