KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — The Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Transportation have issued a joint safety alert in advance of Monday’s eclipse.
MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa has a special message for those who want to watch the event from the road.
“If you’re driving and it occurs to you that it’s about to happen, find a park-and-ride, or a rest area, or a parking lot,” Schirripa said. “Don’t do it in the lane, obviously, or even on the shoulder.”
He said both agencies want to keep potentially deadly surprises to a minimum.
“We’ve all been on the highway at some point, maybe we’re behind a semi or a long line of cars, and suddenly there’s a car on the shoulder that we didn’t see ahead of time and we’re caught off guard by that,” Schirripa said. “The last thing we want to do is create a situation where that happens.”
On Monday, the southern portion of the state will enjoy a partial eclipse around 2 p.m.
Kalamazoo is expecting 83 percent coverage at 2:23 p.m.
