LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The Michigan State Police will have another batch of new uniformed and armed officers ready to go by this winter.
New recruits have just entered the MSP’s 22nd Motor Carrier Officer Recruit School, where they are set to graduate on December 21 of this year.
Motor Carrier Officers mostly handle commercial vehicle problems, like making sure semis are the proper weight and not carrying illicit substances, as well as working at border patrol stations with U.S Customs.
The last class that the MSP held graduated 13 officers last January. They hold each new class when an influx of coinciding officer retirements occur.
Sgt. David Haynes is in charge of training this group of recruits, which was needled down from 1500 applicants to just 14 students in the class. He says the program is designed to be tough on the new recruits.
“Waking them up at 5 a.m. and going right into training until 10 p.m., every day is very intense. With those 14 recruits, they are very eager and excited to work through an extremely difficult and rigorous program.”
After completion of the 14 week course, the recruits will complete the field training officer program and a solo patrol interview before graduating from the entire school.
