KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A peaceful march was held in Kalamazoo Saturday night to protest violence in Charlottesville, Virginia by white supremacist groups.
The violence in Virginia resulted in at least one death and 19 injuries when a man from a town near Toledo Ohio plowed his car into a group of counter demonstrators.
Two Virginia state troopers were killed when a helicopter patrolling the scene crashed outside of Charlottesville.
The Kalamazoo protestors gathered near the Radisson and marched down the Downtown Mall. They have scheduled a Bronson Park rally Sunday afternoon at 2:30.
Senator Debbie Stabenow issued a statement saying “The violence in Charlottesville is horrifying and does not represent who we are as Americans.
Senator Gary Peters says the “Racism & hatred displayed in Charlottesville go against our nation’s values. We must stand together to condemn these hateful actions.”
Congressman Fred Upton called what happed in Charlottesville disturbing. “It shames us as a nation. It needs to stop. Now. We are all watching. It threatens the very core of our country: Tolerance, acceptance, & embracing diversity.
The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly seeking legal advice on how to protect their logo after white nationalists used a nearly identical graphic, with just subtle changes to the “winged wheel”
Rather than spokes in the wheel there are lightning bolts similar in design to the bolts used by the Nazi’s. The symbols were seen on signs during violent protests in Charlottesville on Friday.
The Red Wings have issued a statement saying they condemn the use of the logo and that they “vehemently disagree” with the ideology and “are not associated in any way” with the events in Charlottesville.
There is a white nationalist group that calls themselves the Detroit Right Wings, that uses a logo similar to the hockey team, but it’s not known if that group was in Virginia for the protests.
