MIAMI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Kid is about to become an owner.
There have been reports for months that Derek Jeter had been assembling a team to purchase the Miami Marlins.
The Miami Herald is now reporting that an agreement has been struck with Jeffrey Loria to sell the club to a group headed by Jeter and business partner Bruce Sherman.
The price-tag would be $1.2-billion dollars.
That’s why Jeter needs a team to pull it off. He is rich, but he isn’t that rich. That would be the second highest price in MLB history, but a distant second to the 2-billion paid for the Los Angeles Dodgers five years ago.
Sherman would have controlling interest but he would reportedly leave the baseball management to Jeter.
The deal still needs league approval. It’s expected to be discussed next week, but no vote is expected.
