NORTON SHORES (WKZO-AM/FM) — Michigan State Police investigators have labeled the death of a 34-year-old Norton Shores Police Department officer who wrecked his cruiser in May an accident.
It’s still not clear, however, what specifically caused Jonathan Ginka’s squad car to leave Henry Street and collide with a tree at 46 mph.
MSP confirmed Ginka took his foot off the gas and put it on the brake just before the fatal collision. They say he was on his way back to the station at the end of his 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift at the time of the wreck.
Ginka was not responding to a call or using a communications device. He was wearing a seat belt.
