CASCADE TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A South Haven man who recently received the nation’s highest honor is back home.
James McCloughan was welcomed home at Gerald R. Ford International Airport by dozens of West Michgan residents Wednesday evening after receiving the medal of honor in Washington, D.C Monday evening. The 71-year-old’s plane was delayed for over four hours and many continued to wait for his arrival.
The retired army medic received the award for saving ten soldiers during a battle in Vietnam in 1969, despite being wounded.
In 1972, he earned a Master of Arts in counseling and psychology from Western Michigan University. McCloughan taught sociology and psychology at South Haven High School until his retirement in 2008. He currently lives in South Haven, Michigan with his wife Chérie.
