GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos paid a visit to West Michigan and spoke about the tough confirmation battle she endured.
DeVos was in Grand Rapids visiting the Vand Andel Institute and Grand Rapids Community College. She got a first-hand look at apprenticeship programs at GRCC and took questions from kids at Van Andel Education Institute. DeVos says she wants to expand choices and options for students. She says that while traditional public schools are meeting the needs of most, “even the best school doesn’t work for every single child.”
“My continued focus on doing what’s right for students and on behalf of students really helps me move through just about anything.”
The Holland native also spoke about her tough confirmation as U.S. Secretary.
“It was not part of the equation, but my passion for helping kids and especially kids that have not had the same kind opportunities as my children or as some of my friends and associates have had, is really the driver.”
Devos was nominated and confirmed by the slimmest margin possible in the U.S. Senate for the job that required Vice President Mike Pence to cast a tiebreaking vote in her favor.
