ST. CLAIR, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – While participating in an offshore powerboat race on the St. Clair River, a Spring Lake man was killed.
Details surrounding the incident are scarce, but according to several major news outlets, Spring Lake resident Keith Holmes died when his 40-foot speedboat crashed at St. Clair Riverfest on Sunday, July 30.
Holmes’ death occurred when his speedboat, called the CatCanDo, collided with another racing speedboat known as Miss GEICO. The death is being reported as an accident. Also riding in the CatCanDo speedboat at the time of the incident were Marc Granet and Scott Begovich. Members of both teams received minor injuries from the crash.
WZZM Grand Rapids reports that the crash happened around 5:30 p.m. and the rest of the races were then cancelled after the incident.
The cause of the speedboat crash is still being investigated by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department.
