VICKSBURG (WKZO-AM/FM) — The red swamp crayfish is a prohibited invasive species that are unlawful to possess, import, sell or introduce in Michigan as a live organism.
In Louisiana, they are dinner.
An infestation of the aggressive crawdads have been discovered in Sunset Lake near Vicksburg and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will be spending some time assessing just how many are there and whether they have spread to other nearby waterways in the coming days as they try to control and presumably eradicate the invasion.
The DNR said they burrow into the banks of waterways and can weaken dams and other infrastructure. They also push out and eat native species and can reproduce rapidly.
